Pearl of the Baltic Sea
Saaremaa is the most exciting island in the Baltic Sea
Saaremaa is the second biggest, and we dare say the most exciting island in the Baltic Sea. It is often introduced to foreigners/tourists as the paradise island of the Baltic Sea and Costa del Sol of the Nordic countries. This comparison, as unaccustomed and even funny as it may seem to Estonians, still has its justification: the summers of Saaremaa are warm and sunny.
Average annual temperature is 4 degrees warmer than on the mainland of Estonia and summers last longer: it’s usually virid even in October. There is, however, enough snow during winter. Mild maritime climate makes it easier to tolerate midsummer heat.
The unique nature of Saaremaa has lot to offer: stone fences still winding on juniper fields, ancient windmills with well-preserved thatched roofs, log houses. The environment remains unpolluted and the water clean, no heavy industry or traffic jams disturb its peace.
