Marja-Leena and Herkko: Kramer fulfilled our dream

Marja-Leena and Herkko Hiekkamies are sitting on the couch in their flat in Helsinki, going through photos made in Saaremaa during summers. They recall summers spent in their summerhouse that has now become the second home for the couple. „It is an elating place. Our thoughts wander back to Ninase again and again“

Home for summer was found in Saaremaa

Marja-Leena and Herkko were familiar to the island for a long time. Some of their acquaintances had been there, but the idea of having their own summerhouse there had never occurred to them. Their initial plan was to obtain a summer cottage in Finland, but the plan failed due to the rapid increase in real estate prices. Buying a house on the seashore would have required a barrowful of bills.

Then they happened to see a TV-show named Summer Paradise. „It was about Finns, who had bought a summerhouse to Saaremaa. The shots of the island were amazing and that’s how the idea came to us“. Their interest grew deeper after their first visit to Saaremaa, and after they heard about plans of starting regular vessel traffic between Saaremaa and Finland, they reached the decision and sealed the deal with Kramer, and bought a plot and a log house on it in Ninase, Mustjala.

„Some people back in Finland were really amazed. „How you dare to build a house in Estonia?“. We were not afraid of anything. All necessary documents were completed with extreme care and thoroughness, even more so than in Finland.“ The decision was even easier, considering the credibility of the company. „Cooperation with Kramer has been smooth and pleasant.“

There is much to discover yet in Saaremaa

Marja-Leena’s and Herkko’s summerhouse began thriving in winter/spring following the deed and was completed just in time. When the couple first stepped on their premises on St John’s Day, 2004, they were very happy: the house was much bigger and more beautiful than they had expected. „We had seen the house only on plans before. In reality it was bigger than we had expected. A pleasant surprise, more room is always good.“

Marja-Leena’s and Herkko’s first summer was spent mostly near their own house. In the next years they have had time to acquaint themselves with the island. „The nature is breathtakingly beautiful, the landscapes are interesting, there are many beautiful plants and flowers, also birds and animals. Although our house is not exactly on the seashore, we can hear the sound of waves well enough“

Never regretted

Marja-Leena and Herkko are observing Saaremaa’s quick development with delight. The roads are in good order. Renovation and building is in progress in Kuressaare. There are 4 spas around the town and its cultural life is brisk. „There is really much going on during summers. The number of new restaurants and pubs offering local delicatessen in different locations has grown“, Marja-Leena and Herkko say contentedly.

By now, the couple has made many new acquaintances they often visit and who visit them. Thanks to a local fisherman they know, they can often enjoy food from fresh fish. Naturally, they have made friends with all neighbors in Ninase village built by Kramer. „Those looking for peace, tranquility and escape form everyday strain will find it in Saaremaa. All woes disappear here, in Saaremaa’s nature, on the coast of the Baltic Sea“, Marja-Leena and Harkko confidently maintain.

The couple goes through the photos with growing enthusiasm. They look at the map of Saaremaa and make plans for the next summer. „We have never regretted our choice. We are very content and more end more elated!“
